President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the FBI, Kash Patel, has been the target of an alleged Iranian cyberattack, according to sources cited by far-left CNN.
Patel was recently informed by the bureau that he had been targeted in an Iranian hacking attempt.
Hackers reportedly accessed at least some of Patel’s communications, though the extent of the breach remains undisclosed.
Trump transition spokesman Alex Pfeiffer condemned the attack, stating, “Kash Patel was a key part of the first Trump administration’s efforts against the terrorist Iranian regime and will implement President Trump’s policies to protect America from adversaries as the FBI Director.”
Patel, known for his instrumental role in countering Iranian influence during Trump’s first term, is a symbolic target for Tehran.
Iran has long viewed Patel as a chief architect of Trump’s maximum pressure campaign, which included crippling sanctions and the elimination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Patel has consistently criticized the Biden administration’s policies regarding Iran, including its renewal of sanctions waivers. Speaking on Fox Business in March, Patel referred to the waivers as “appeasement,” asserting, ““You are either for the mullahs and ayatollahs in Iran or you are against them.”
Patel praised the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its imposition of stringent sanctions on Tehran, arguing that these measures prevented the regime from advancing its nuclear ambitions, according to Iran International.
“The Trump administration was wholly against them, withdrew from the JCPOA, used suffocating sanction to ensure they did not monetize their oil regime to enrich their weapons-grade nuclear program. That’s the ultimate deterrent,” he stated.
Patel also cast doubt on the Biden administration’s narrative that funds released to Iran were earmarked for humanitarian aid, suggesting they indirectly benefited Iranian-backed groups like Hamas.
Patel isn’t the only Trump ally targeted in recent months. Deputy Attorney General-designate Todd Blanche was recently informed by the FBI that Chinese hackers tapped his cellphone. Additionally, attorney Lindsey Halligan, another close Trump ally, was reportedly ensnared in an Iranian hacking operation earlier this year.
Donald Trump Jr., a key figure in the Trump orbit, has also been targeted. He disclosed that the FBI warned him about being one of Iran’s “top targets.”
Investigations have revealed that Iranian hackers breached the email account of longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone in June. Using his compromised account, they attempted to infiltrate the email of a senior Trump campaign official.
Reports suggest that stolen information was funneled to individuals linked to President Joe Biden’s campaign over the summer, casting a shadow over election integrity.
In September, the FBI uncovered evidence that Iranian hackers sent the Biden campaign what they called “unsolicited” information stolen from Trump’s campaign. It is unclear whether, at this point, Biden’s campaign utilized the stolen information against Trump.
The emails were sent in late June and early July just weeks before Biden was forced out of the race as part of a Democrat coup.
Chinese hackers reportedly targeted the cellphones of President Donald Trump and vice-president Senator JD Vance last October.
Sources familiar with the situation informed ABC News that these attacks are part of a larger, highly sophisticated cyber campaign believed to be orchestrated by state-affiliated actors from China.
The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a joint statement confirming an investigation into unauthorized access to U.S. telecommunications systems by individuals allegedly tied to the Chinese government.
